In a township with an organized police department, the township board can appoint a member to serve as a liaison between the township board and the police department. The commissioner would discuss issues and make recommendations to the township board on behalf of the police department. Having a commissioner would avoid having each township board member involved with the day-to-day responsibilities of the police department.
