Welcome to township government, and welcome to the Michigan Townships Association! As you serve your community, MTA is here to help you fulfill your role as a township legislator

First, a little about us. MTA was established more than 65 years ago to provide a unified voice for Michigan townships. The Association’s dedicated board of directors and staff are committed to helping our 6,500 member township officials govern their townships effectively and improve the services they provide to Michigan’s five million-plus township residents.

MTA membership is, first and foremost, about community. MTA connects you with a community of township officials. MTA, like no one else, speaks your language, knows your history, and values you as an essential part of the form of local government closest to the people. We celebrate your successes, and share your story. Our programs and services are tailored specifically with only townships in mind–offering targeted news, updates and information to help township officials serve their communities with purpose and pride.

Explore Online Resources
MTA’s website offers hundreds of pages of information and knowledge for Michigan’s township officials. Log in to the members-only section of the website to unlock access to an index of township topics spanning assessing and zoning, and everything in between, as well as samples, resource toolkits, helpful links, and more. (Note: Some of the links below will require you to log in!)
 
Once you are added to MTA’s database, you will have full access to all of MTA’s online resources. You log in using your email address on file with MTA, and a temporary password that you’ll receive from MTA. Click on the link above to get yourself added to our database!
 
After you log in, you can also access MTA’s members-only online networking site, Community Connection, connecting you with your fellow township officials from around the state, as well as MTA’s Online Learning Center.

MTA’s Member Information Services Department is available to answer member inquiries on all facets of township governance and administration. The MIS Department’s three staffers–including an attorney and two experienced former local government officials–are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can be reached via phone (517-321-6467) or fax (517-321-8908)

MTA’s Government Relations Department is your connection to what’s happening at the Capitol and in Washington, D.C. MTA provides a unified voice advocating for local authority that the broadest spectrum of township officials need to preserve, protect and enhance the quality of life for township residents. MTA’s experienced lobbyists represent township government before the Michigan Legislature, executive office and state agencies, while initiating and monitoring legislation that is in the best interest of townships.

We offer nearly two dozen publications, covering township topics from budgeting, to planning and zoning, to specific guidebooks for each elected office, and more. Member elected officials also receive the award-winning monthly magazine, Township Focus, keeping you informed on the latest township happenings, best practices, and information on how to carry out your duties and responsibilities as a local elected leader. Our e-newsletters, Township Voice, and Township Insights offer legislative updates impacting townships.
