Legislation to establish a “Public Safety and Violence Prevention Fund” to proportionately distribute money from sales tax revenue to cities, villages, townships and counties for public safety measures based on the level of crime in each local unit was approved by a House committee. House Bills 4260 and 4261, sponsored by Reps. Mike Harris (R-Clarkston) and Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) and supported by MTA, would deposit $115 million of sales tax revenues into the fund for local units to provide resources to help reduce violent crime across Michigan. The House is expected to vote on the bill soon.
