Presidential primary set for Feb. 27 following Nov. 14 Legislature adjournment

Michigan’s presidential primary is set for Feb. 27, with the state Legislature officially adjourning for the 2023 session year on Tuesday, Nov. 14. This date, called “sine die,” is the day that starts the clock for legislation without immediate effect—meaning any legislation passed and signed into law that was not given immediate effect by both chambers must wait 90 days after sine die to become effective. The Legislature adjourned earlier than its usual December date so several bills, including the February presidential primary and several Proposal 2/election reform bills will go into effect before Feb. 27, 2024. The state Bureau of Elections has also posted the Feb. 27 presidential primary calendar for elections administrators.
