State would reimburse locals for special legislative elections under bill reported from committee

Townships and cities would no longer be responsible for the costs associated with holding a special election to fill a legislative vacancy if the governor directs that the election will be held on a date that is not a regular election date. Under House Bill 4033, sponsored by Rep. Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) the reimbursement process would work in the same manner as it does for a presidential primary and other statewide special elections. The bill was reported by the House Elections Committee and now moves to the full House.
