Ishpeming Township (Marquette Co.) Supervisor James Nankervis will continue to serve on the Michigan Townships Association (MTA) Board of Directors, after being re-elected to the position of MTA District 2 director in a caucus election during the MTA Annual Conference, held earlier this month in Grand Rapids. District 2 encompasses Baraga, Dickinson, Marquette and Iron Counties.
A long-time supervisor, Nankervis began serving his township in this position in 1988. He got his start in local government on the planning commission, where he served from 1975 to 1982, before serving on the Ishpeming Area Joint Wastewater Treatment Board from 1981 to 1988. He is currently president of the Marquette County MTA Chapter, a position he has held since 2012.
Nankervis values the collaboration and cooperation that he sees and experiences at both his township and a statewide level. “The most rewarding part of serving in local government is working with the residents in the township,” he said. “In my role on the MTA Board, I will continue working with MTA directors throughout the state to increase road funding and state-shared revenues, and to ensure all residents in the state are treated equally.”
Nankervis currently services on the county Building Code Board of Appeals, Marq-Tran Board, and Pathways Community Mental Health Board. He was a Bay Cliff Health Camp board member for 14 years, until 2012, and served on the board for Teaching Family Homes of Michigan for 10 years, starting in 2002. In 1998, Nankervis received the American Hometown Leadership Award from Walmart.
MTA represents more than 99% of Michigan’s 1,240 townships and is the largest municipal association in the state.
