Peter Kleiman honored as MTA Life Member

Harris Township (Menominee Co.) Supervisor Peter Kleiman has been honored by the Michigan Townships Association (MTA) as the Association’s newest life member. He received the “MTA Life Member Award” before nearly 1,000 of township peers and special guests at an award ceremony at the MTA Banquet, held during the Association’s Annual Conference & Expo last month in Acme Township (Grand Traverse Co.). Kleiman served as 2021 MTA president.

Kleiman, who has been township supervisor since 1988, has served on the MTA Board of Directors since 2011.

“I started serving on local boards when I was 23 and was elected to the local school board,” Kleiman said. “When I was a new township supervisor, my colleague told me to contact MTA when I had questions. The Association has always helped me as I serve my township, just as it has helped and continues to help so many other Michigan township leaders. I am grateful for this award honoring my time on the MTA Board of Directors, and thank those with whom I have worked at the Association and around the state.”

In addition to serving as township supervisor, Kleiman is a lifelong farmer, who retired from dairy farming in 2018 and is now raising beef cattle. He represents Upper Peninsula farmers on the Michigan Farm Bureau Board of Directors, and was a long-time president of the Menominee County

Farm Bureau and served on its board for more than 20 years.

Kleiman has served on many local, state and national boards and commissions during his decades of public service. He serves on the executive committee of the Central Upper Peninsula Panning and Development Regional Commission and on the Equity Cooperative Livestock Corporation Board of Directors, and was president of Family Dairies USA. In addition, he served for more than 24 years on the North Central Area Schools board—with more than half as president.
