Verkest re-elected to Michigan Townships Association Board of Directors

Harrison Charter Township (Macomb Co.) Supervisor Kenneth Verkest has been re-elected to the Michigan Townships Association (MTA) Board of Directors, serving as director of MTA District 21, which encompasses Lapeer, Oakland and Macomb Counties. Verkest was re-elected to the position by his township peers at a caucus election held earlier this month at MTA’s 2025 Annual Educational Conference in Grand Rapids. MTA represents more than 99% of Michigan’s 1,240 townships and is the largest municipal association in the state.

Verkest has served Harrison Charter Township for nearly 20 years, and has been supervisor since 2011. Prior to his role as supervisor, Verkest served as township trustee from 2008 to 2011, and was also a member of the township zoning board of appeals for three years, from 2005 to 2008. He values his experiences working for both his own community, and all townships through his service on the MTA Board. “Township government is truly grassroots, and you are most connected to the people you serve,” he said. “The closer you are to the people you serve, the better you understand them. My time as an MTA district director has proven rewarding, fun and educational. I will continue to advocate for township government, especially local control.”

Verkest was first elected to the MTA Board in 2023. A lifelong member of St. Hubert Catholic Church, Verkest has been a Meals on Wheels volunteer since 2018, and is a member of the Eagles, Belgian American Century Club and Knights of Columbus. He served on the Mt. Clemens YMCA Board for five years, until 2024, and was a L’Anse Creuse High School Band booster and vice president for 17 years, from 2006 to 2023.
